(Sanskrit for “circle”) an artistic representation of higher thought and deeper meaning given as a geometric symbol used to focus one’s attention.
The image has been used by cultures around the world in many different periods up to the present. The details of the meaning of a given mandala depend on the individual creating or observing the image, but mandalas in every culture serve the purpose of centering an individual or community on a given narrative in order to encourage introspection and an awareness of one’s place and purpose in the world; this awareness then allows for peace of mind.
Mandalas appear in the art and architecture of various cultures around the world. It was, and is, used as a meditative tool in the belief systems of Jainism, Buddhism, and Shintoism, and frequently appears in Persian art.
The image is usually defined as a circle decorated with imagery which directs the mind of the observer (or creator) inwards from the outer rim toward deeper reflection on the meaning and purpose of life, the nature of the universe, the true nature of the self, the underlying form of reality, and expansive cosmological truths.

Possessing a love of art from a very young age, my creative journey began with a background in traditional media & materials and has grown into an ever-expanding career as a graphic designer. Developing during the early stages of modern technology allowed for a gradual transition into technology-based artistic expression, which continues to evolve today. As a native of Western Maryland, I have worked with many local and national businesses during my 20+ year career in graphic design & marketing. I have enjoyed the opportunity to create designs for many different applications, including print work, digital media, audio/video, and stage production.
